Hailing from San José, Costa Rica, Diego D. aka DJ Ares has proven that age and years of experience are secondary when much effort is put into what he loves the most: Music.
Diego D aka DJ Ares started playing at Café 83 Sur in Costa Rica, a small, restaurant-bar, slowly gaining ground into other venues whose managers were soon curious about his particular sound. Influenced by DJ’s like Steve Lawler, Chus & Ceballos, Dr Kucho, DJ Fist, Mario Ochoa, Oscar G and Antoine Clamaran, he’s taken the Costa Rican dance scene by storm.
Diego D has played on several Mixology events at the now defunct Club 360, in San José Costa Rica, as well as in the Back to Basics parties at Club Vertigo, Central America’s very best club where he achieved a residency within less than 3 years. The club, an idea born in both the owners’ and Deep Dish’s Sharam’s mind, boasts sound and equipment on par with the best clubs around the world. It is in this place that Diego’s shared turntables with DJ’s like Tom Stephan, Alex Santer, David Alvarado, Martin Accorsi, DJ Rap, Chus & Ceballos, Miss Honey Dijon, Dayhota, among many others.
Diego D’s sounds branch into two genres that are very different from each other. One of them is Tribal House. With chunky, ethnic rythms, ranging from African, Iberican to Latin, Diego’s managed to pump the dance floor on many occasions making peeps think twice before leaving. On a different note, he experiments with jazzy, funky sounds that show influence from DJ’s like Fred Everything, Mark Farina, Jason Hodges, Colette, and Kaskade, just to name a few.
Diego D manages to either set the mood for dancing, slowly moving to the sounds, or just kicking back and listening. Among his many projects, he’s working on a track that will fuse the sounds already present in his previous tribal tracks, with the newly acquired taste for funky house.
“I’m taking house more seriously, showing some respect for it. I’m not longer interested solely in slammin’ tracks, overly intense beats… Music, as an art, is as broad as humans will allow, and house is something I’m very willing to explore.”
